Pretty in pink

I got a job for a birthday cake this past weekend with one specification. Make it pretty. We talked it over and I did a sketch they approved of. It was a confetti cake with chocolate american buttercream frosting. Those recipes can be found here and here.

These are my favorite recipes and for the confetti part I add Wilton Rainbow Jimmies folded into the batter right before they go in the oven. I cut the top of the cake on a downwards slope before icing to make it declined.

For the outside I started with a pick marble effect using fondant. I took white fondant and added some pink gel food coloring. I started to work it in until I started to see streaks through the fondant. As soon as I did I rolled out the fondant to an 1/8 of an inch thick and covered the cake. When you roll it out this caused the fondant to have a marble effect.

Next I did some flowers. I actually ran out of gumpaste so I had to find a way to make flowers without it. I found this great article on simple flowers able to be made out of fondant. You can read it here. As you can see I applied it to two different kinds of flowers

For the letters I used my alphabet cutters to cut them out of white fondant before I brushed them with edible silver luster dust.
